What counts as urgent
Severe or worsening tooth pain, facial swelling, a knocked-out or broken tooth, bleeding that won't stop, or an abscess. If swelling ever affects your breathing or swallowing, that's beyond a dental office — go to the emergency room or call 911 first.
What to do while you head in
For a knocked-out adult tooth: handle it by the crown (not the root), keep it moist in milk or saliva, and get here fast — time matters. For pain, over-the-counter pain relief and a cold compress help; never place aspirin against the gum. For a broken tooth, save any pieces and rinse gently with warm water.
