Chocolate is Good
for Your Teeth!
Many of you already know that dark chocolate has heart healthy benefits, but did you know that it’s also good for your teeth. Here are a few facts just in time for Valentine’s Day:
Chocolate contains strong antioxidant compounds that inhibit the growth of decay causing bacteria. This antioxidant compound, polyphenol, found in chocolate prevent the bad bacteria from turning sugar and starches into decay producing acids, as well as neutralizes the microorganisms that cause bad breath. In fact, research has shown that cocoa extract is more effective than fluoride in fighting cavities.

Chocolate has an abundance of antioxidants than can also reduce the inflammation in the body that can lead to periodontal disease.
• • •
Chocolate contains cocoa butter that can coat your teeth and prevents plaque from sticking to them, keeping your pearly whites shining bright.
• • •
Keep in mind that not all chocolate is good for you. Dark chocolate is the healthiest option, because it is the least processed and closest to the cocoa bean. And like any sweet treat, dark chocolate should be consumed in moderation, about one ounce (150 calories) per day.
