Helpful Tips for Clean and White Teeth
A great smile starts with your teeth. If teeth are stained, you may hesitate to smile broadly or laugh in public. There are several steps you can take to enhance your smile starting with a teeth cleaning visit with your dentist.
The Steps to a Bright Smile
Not everyone is blessed with naturally white teeth. A consultation with your dentist will provide ways to achieve your brightest smile, and steps to keep it looking that way.
Start by having teeth cleaned by your dental professional. Having tartar removed and teeth polished will remove topical stains. Teeth whitening is one option that may be recommended. Just be sure to acquire teeth whitening through your dentist who is a licensed professional. This will assure that you are using safe and thoroughly tested products. And if you have questions or concerns, you have someone to provide the answers you need.
Daily Oral Maintenance – Brushing daily is great, but it’s important to use the right tools and correct technique. Use a soft bristle toothbrush and moderate pressure brushing for two minutes twice a day. There are many pastes and gels on the market that will help promote a brighter smile, but make sure you are using a fluoridated toothpaste to keep teeth healthy as well as looking great.
Floss daily – Since your toothbrush only reaches about two thirds of the surface of your teeth, you need to floss every day to make sure 100% of your teeth’s surfaces are being cleaned.
If a fluoride or anti-bacterial rinse is recommended, use as directed.
Diet and Lifestyle
Familiarize yourself with the foods known to stain teeth … coffee, tea, cola, red wine, berries, dark sauces … remember, if it is dark, it can probably discolor your teeth. Use a straw when drinking cold beverages.
Acidic foods and beverages can soften dental enamel. Brushing too soon following consumption can damage the protective covering on teeth. Wait 30 to 60 minutes to brush, but rinse thoroughly with water in the meantime.
Tobacco stains teeth – do not use in any form.
Saliva helps to flush away harmful bacteria that stains teeth. Chewing sugar free gum may help promote saliva production.
Avoid harmful dental myths that promise whiter teeth; check with your dentist before trying.
