Good Oral Hygiene Benefits That Might Surprise You

family dentist Fort Worth

Everyone knows that we should brush and floss daily. These are two of the things required to enhance our oral health. Visits with our family dentist every six months are also needed for maintaining a healthy smile. But maybe we could be doing some things better to keep teeth and gums healthy and looking great.

Oral Hygiene Habits that You Might Be Able to Improve Upon

Brushing twice a day … while we know to do this, did you know that the tools you use and how you perform brushing can truly make a difference?

Your toothbrush should be soft bristled. Gone are the days when it was thought that you needed to scrub your teeth with a hard bristle toothbrush. If you’re doing that, please stop. You are damaging protective dental enamel and gum tissue.

A soft bristle toothbrush coupled with a fluoridated toothpaste should be used for two minutes twice daily. Use moderate pressure employing a circular motion.

Daily flossing … your toothbrush only reaches about two thirds of the surface of your teeth. Dental floss gets between teeth to remove what brushing missed.

Visit your family dentist … your dental provider will be able to remove plaque and topical stain that has formed since your last visit. The dental exam performed is looking for problems that can be corrected before they escalate. And the oral cancer screening can potentially save your life!

Diet … A healthy diet consists primarily of fruits, vegetables, proteins, dairy and healthy grains. Drinking plenty of water daily supports oral and overall health.

The Payoff of Maintaining a Healthy Smile

Minimizing the chance for tooth decay and gum disease means you’re improving the odds of keeping all your teeth. You might also be saving time and expense by reducing the potential for fillings, dental crowns, root canals, and tooth replacement procedures.

Better overall health … dental health is a big factor when discussing things like stroke risk, heart disease, and illnesses of the immune system like diabetes. How you take care of your teeth can have a big impact on maintaining a healthy body.

So do everything you can for optimal oral hygiene … you will be glad you did! If it’s time to schedule your next dental cleaning and exam, contact the office of Dr. Randy Parham today.
