Enjoy a More Natural Looking Smile with Tooth-Colored Fillings

tooth colored fillings Fort Worth

There was a time when the only option available to treat dental decay was to have the cavity filled with silver amalgam. Thankfully, there is another choice available that is safe, virtually undetectable, and is suitable for patients of all ages. Tooth-colored fillings are designed to be color matched to your tooth shade providing a natural and long lasting tooth repair.

Differences Between Amalgam and Tooth-colored Fillings

The differences are stark in appearance, method of application, and the material itself used to treat dental decay.

Appearance: Amalgam is silver often turning much darker over time. Tooth-colored fillings are made to match your tooth in shape and color. Your dentist will artfully apply the composite, contouring it to match surrounding teeth so the finished result will look natural and blend perfectly with neighboring teeth.

Method of Application: With amalgam, much more of the tooth must be removed. This threatens the integrity of the tooth over time. With composite, much less of the tooth is altered. When the tooth is filled it is done in stages with each application being shaped and dried before going on to the next layer. This process means your dentist will take a little longer to complete care, but the result will be worth the extra time spent.

Materials Used: With amalgam, the ongoing concern lies in the use of mercury. With mercury free fillings, the primary components of the filling are plastic and ceramic; and have been proven to be totally safe for this application.

Do I Have a Choice?

This is a discussion you must have with your dentist. Primary consideration must be given to the age of patient, the location of the cavity, and your financial concerns. Tooth-colored fillings are generally a little more costly as they take more time to place; and require more work to make them look natural and blend in with surrounding dentition.

There is no question that the final result using tooth-colored free fillings will be more aesthetically pleasing; and with improvements made to composite restorations, tooth-colored fillings are now suitable to repair even back teeth where the pressure from chewing is a primary concern.
