Caring for Your Teeth While Traveling or On the Go
Summer is quickly approaching and millions of people will be taking much-needed trips for fun and relaxation. While travel is a great way to recharge, it’s important to take good care of your teeth and gums while you’re on the road. Our family dentist provides excellent preventive and restorative dental care to folks in our community. If you have questions about oral hygiene or would like product recommendations, give our friendly team a call.
Following are helpful tips for keeping your teeth and gums healthy when you’re away from home.
Pack an Oral Hygiene Kit
Keeping all your oral hygiene essentials in one kit is a great way to ensure that you have everything you need when you’re on the go. Your oral hygiene kit should contain a toothbrush, a travel case for your toothbrush, dental floss, and toothpaste. If you like using mouthwash, add a travel-sized bottle to your kit.
Today, most supermarkets carry an array of popular oral hygiene tools and products in convenient travel sizes. We recommend purchasing these necessities before your trip so that you have everything you need while you’re away.
Store Your Toothbrush Properly
Your toothbrush is a great tool to protect your teeth and gums. Storing it improperly, however, can lead to the growth of harmful bacteria. A toothbrush should be kept in the open air to dry between brushings. It’s even better if you can store it upright to help it dry faster. Keeping your toothbrush wet and inside a traveling case could harbor nasty germs.
Stay Hydrated
Long car and plane rides along with being away from home can make it easy to become dehydrated. Dehydration is problematic to your overall wellbeing and your oral health. When we are dehydrated, soft oral tissue becomes dry, which can lead to inflamed gums. Moreover, water helps neutralize harmful acids that erode tooth enamel.
We strongly encourage patients to make a concerted effort to stay hydrated while they’re on the road. Packing a large thermos or tumbler with a lid is a great way to ensure that you always have water on hand.
