Benefits of Dental Crowns and Bridges

crowns and bridges Fort Worth

Receiving dental crowns or bridges could change your life. These restorations and prosthetics improve oral function and restore appearances. If your dentist has recommended that you receive crowns and/or bridges, it is important to act fast. Prolonging treatment could lead to tooth loss, your teeth shifting out of position, and bone atrophy.

Dental Crowns: What You Need to Know

Dental crowns are incredible restorations that can extend the life of worn and diseased teeth. A crown is a custom-made restoration that’s shaped like a tooth. Hollow on the inside, dental crowns fit over a tooth to cover its biting surfaces and all its sides down to the gums.

Crowns are used to strengthen and protect diseased and damaged teeth. When teeth are weakened by permanent damage or decay, it’s only a matter of time before the tooth’s structure degrades to the point of needing to be extracted. Crowns allow people to keep their natural teeth much longer and enjoy optimal oral function.

Beyond protecting biologic tooth structure, dental crowns are also used to replace teeth when they are attached to abutments on dental implants. While the implant replaces lost root structure, a crown will provide the visible surfaces necessary to bite down on food and support adjacent teeth.

These restorations can be made from a variety of materials including metals like zirconia and gold. Tooth-colored materials like porcelain fused to metal or all porcelain are available, too. White crowns made from porcelain produce a very natural looking aesthetic. Porcelain is virtually indistinguishable from natural, healthy teeth.

What Bridges Are and When They are Necessary

Bridges are prosthetics. They are composed of a series of dental crowns and are used to “bridge” the gap between biological teeth and missing teeth. A bridge can replace up to four teeth, consecutively. Bridges replace visible tooth structure above the gums. They provide the biting surfaces necessary to improve oral function after tooth loss and restore one’s appearance.

In addition to attaching to biological teeth on either side, bridges can also be fixed to dental implants. Like crowns, bridges are made from a variety of materials like gold, silver, zirconia, and porcelain.
